Michael Henson

Michael Henson,
Co-Founder, Chairman

Michael R. Henson has founded or served as CEO and chairman/Board member for 16 emerging healthcare (medical device or biotechnology) firms. Six of these were privately held firms acquired by multinational companies, while five have advanced through the initial public offering (IPO) stage. Several of these companies remain closely held private firms. In total, these firms have received financial investments of approximately $1 billion and have employed in excess of 1,000 people. In addition, Mr. Henson is a member of the Board of Directors of the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF), one of the largest clinical cardiovascular research foundations in the United States. Mr. Henson also serves as principal Manager for four private investment funds and as an advisor to two additional private investment funds, all focused on early and mid - stage medical device startup ventures.

Paul Molloy

Paul Molloy,

Paul Molloy began his career as a CRNA practicing in The Netherlands before joining Datascope Corporation in New Jersey in 1989, where he managed the international Cardiac Assist business. He has progressed through senior management positions at Baxter CVG (now Edwards), US Surgical Corporation (now part of Covideon) and Radiance Medical Systems (a NASDAQ-listed company), which merged with Endologix in 2002. In February 2003 Paul was appointed President and Managing Director at LMA International N.V, and was instrumental in the 2005 initial public offering of the firm at a market capitalization in excess of $300 million. Paul has almost 20 years of medical device experience in large corporations and venture-funded businesses at the Board level. He holds an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Samuel Shaolian

Samuel Shaolian,
Co-Founder, Chief Technology Officer

Mr. Shaolian is an experienced executive with over 25 years of experience leading various medical device companies. He was a founder and President of Vertelink Corporation, a company that developed a pioneering minimally invasive spinal surgery that was acquired by Medtronic, Inc. in November 2003. After the acquisition of Vertelink by Medtronic, Mr. Shaolian co-founded Micardia Corporation, developing novel approaches in the field of dynamic cardiovascular implants.

Mr. Shaolian is a co-founder and board member of Onset Medical Corp. and Ellipse Technologies, Inc. Ellipse is developing breakthrough approaches for the treatment of GERD, obesity, and spine. Earlier in his career, he held executive positions as Vice President of R&D at Endologix, Inc. and Cardiodyne, Inc. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering as well as a Masters degree in Bio-Medical Engineering from Tel-Aviv University, Israel. Mr. Shaolian is inventor or co-inventor of over 100 issued or pending U.S. patents.

Maurice Buchbinder

Maurice Buchbinder, M.D.,

After graduating medical school from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, Dr. Buchbinder moved to Stanford University where he began his fellowship training in cardiovascular medicine, helping to pioneer the field of interventional cardiology. He has been involved in the development of many devices now used routinely in the practice of interventional medicine. His interest for many years has focused on improving the treatment and outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease.

More recently, Dr. Buchbinder began a series of innovations in the percutaneous treatment of various valve conditions, looking for effective alternatives to the more invasive open heart surgery. Dr. Buchbinder has been the founder of many successful start-up companies. He has served on the scientific advisory boards of several companies. He brings to MiCardia a unique set of skills and clinical experience along with a deep understanding of the economics in medical start-ups.

Thomas Thaler

Thomas Thaler,
Board Member

Thomas Thaler graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich (ETHZ) in biochemistry and holds a Ph.D. in life sciences. In addition, he has earned an MBA from ETHZ.

He has more than 15 years of experience in the biotech and medical technology industry, holding senior management positions with Sulzer Medica/Sulzer Orthopedics (Manager Applied Research, responsible for R&D in biomaterial science, biomechanics and biological science, for reconstructive, trauma, spinal and cardiovascular implants), Schneider Europe (Director Clinical and Regulatory Affairs, responsible for clinical research / development and registration of minimally invasive cardio-vascular devices) and Boston Scientific.

In April 2000 he joined Bank Julius Baer as a medical technology and healthcare services equity analyst responsible for global healthcare investment recommendations. Beginning in 2006 he joined HBM Partners, one of the world’s largest investment advisory groups in the field of human medicine, biotechnology and medical technology, as an Investment Advisor for private and public equity investments in medical technology companies.

Michael Lefkowitz

Michael Lefkowitz,
Director, Board Member

Mr. Lefkowitz is a former Program Director of The Samueli Foundation, based in Corona del Mar, CA. The Foundation's charter is to create societal value by making high leverage investments in programs that are innovative, entrepreneurial and sustainable in a number of focused fields. Mr. Lefkowitz spent over 30 years in the telecommunications industry collecting engineering, research, marketing, and management experience prior to joining MiCardia's Board of Directors.

Mr. Lefkowitz is involved in a number of Orange County organizations. He sits on the Board of Governors of Chapman University, the Executive Committee of the MIND Institute, the Board of Directors of Project Tomorrow and the Crystal Cove Alliance, the KOCE Education Committee and the Community Advisory Board of Morasha Day School. He recently chaired the Capital Campaign for the new Samueli Jewish Campus in Irvine.

Mr. Lefkowitz holds a B.S. degree from The Cooper Union and M.Sc. from New York University. He is also a graduate of the Stanford University Executive Institute Management Program.

Shawn Moaddeb

Shawn Moaddeb,

Shawn Moaddeb has been in the medical device industry since 1982. He has broad experience in both start-ups and large organizations. Mr. Moaddeb’s experience spans responsibilities ranging from research and development, manufacturing engineering, global program management, and business development. Shawn spent 10 years at St. Jude Medical, Inc., Cardiac Rhythm Management division before joining Johnson & Johnson Biosense Webster division as Group Director of R&D in electrophysiology and cardiac ablation. He was co-founder and VP of R&D with MiCardia and then became Executive VP & Chief Operating Officer of Ellipse Technologies, Inc., a company he co-founded to develop devices for the treatment of morbid obesity. He holds 42 issued and pending patents.
